Students were let out of school early on Thursday, Nov. 5 as a precaution after learning of the positive case.

“The Putnam County Department of Health has a contact tracing system in place for Putnam County when there is a confirmed positive case of COVID-19,” DiCarlo wrote in a letter to parents. “They work to identify those who have been in close or proximal contact with the positive person.”

DiCarlo said that, “close contact means being within six feet of a person with COVID-19 for more than 10 minutes. Proximal contact means being in a room or enclosed space with a positive case for an extended period of time.”

Since learning of the positive test, the district and health officials have been contact tracing and anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19 has been instructed to quarantine for at least 14 days.

According to New York State’s COVID-19 “Report Card,” there have been seven students and three staffers who have tested positive for the virus in the district since officials began tracking the numbers on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Cases have been confirmed at Fulmar Road Elementary School, Lakeview Elementary School, Mahopac High School, and now the Mahopac Middle School.

“If you suspect you are becoming ill, you should stay home,” DiCarlo said. “Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle pain, fatigue, new onset of loss of taste and/or smell, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. You should consult with your physician for medical advice in specific cases.”
